A Historical Overview of Aboriginal Dispossession in Southern and Southwest Queensland
As the sub-title states, this book provides an overview of the dispossession of Queensland Aborigines from the time of colonisation up to the late 60's when Australian Aborigines were finally enfranchised.
The focus is on the South West of Queensland, Darling Downs and the Balonne River area. It recounts, from original records, the way in which Aborigines were seen by white settlers and the governments of the day.
The book also provides many factual examples of the treatment given to the Aborigines and the lack of recognition that the country actually belonged to them.
It is a significant study and well worth reading for anyone seeking to understand how colonisation affected Aborigines and what it meant for them into the present day. It is reminiscent of "The Blood on the Wattle" though with a more academic take.
